Hiking and Yoga Retreat in Spain

Welcome to Asturias, Spain's best kept secret, and to Hotel Fuentes de Lucia, situated in a spectacular and untouched corner of northwest Spain. The recently converted farmhouse rests on the hillside of a green valley in the hamlet of Faedo and is part of the Parque Natural Urbinas-La Mesa in the heart of Asturias.

Nestled in Quiros Valley, the "casa rural" is surrounded by mountain peaks, river valleys and ancient forests, a paradise for those who love the great outdoors.  An intricate system of marked footpaths leads you from one small village to the next; up and over mountain passes; and through river valleys. A leisurely stroll along the Senda del Oso, a 30 kilometer trail from Barzana de Quiros to Trubia, is a wonderful way for individuals, couples or families to spend the day whether by bike or on foot.

Fuentes de Lucia is located 5 kilometers from the small lake of Valdemurio, where you can paddle around its shores on a kayak, spend the afternoon with a fishing pole or take a quick dip on a sunny summer day. In the next valley over, walk through the mystical canyon of Las Xanas to Pedrobeyo for a hearty lunch of Fabada, a typical Asturias white bean stew.

We need a minimum of 6 participants to run this retreat. In the event of retreat cancellation, your full payment will be refunded.

Our Hosts

Juan Carlos Fuentes and Judy Colaneri operate a lovely Bed & Breakfast, Hotel Fuentes de Lucia, situated in a spectacular and untouched corner of northwest Spain. 

Both hosts are experienced hiking guides. Judy is also a culinary trained chef from Aspen, Colorado. She spends eight months of the year working in Europe, personally guiding adventurous travelers through her favorite part of the world. Her love of exploration and hiking, joined with her passion for language and the culinary arts, will make your trip a running/hiking-gourmet odyssey.

Juan Carlos met Judy on the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage route, in 1994 while on his second pilgrimage to Santiago. He has since walked the Camino eight times, and has been sharing his expertise and knowledge about his home country with visitors from all over the world. 

Included on the Retreat

  • Lodging for 7 nights at Hotel Fuentes de Lucia
  • Transportation to and from the city of Oviedo (our meeting place)
  • Two meals per day, breakfast and dinner (mostly delicious local vegetarian cuisine)
  • Daily hikes or runs to explore natural areas (2-10 miles/day)

  • Transportation for daily adventure trips (Oviedo, Barzana, lakes, Leon, and the National Park)

Not Included

  • Airfare and lodging before the trip begins
  • Personal expenses for gifts, snacks, lunches, tea and coffee, wine, beer, soft drinks, and mineral water
  • Medical expenses in case of any emergency or injury

What to Bring (more detailed list emailed after Registration)

  • Current Passport
  • Running shoes (required)
  • Second pair of running shoes (recommended)
  • Light clothing for running outdoors
  • Water bottle with belt (required)
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat for running (required)
  • Wrist watch with GPS for tracking mileage and pace (recommended)

General Itinerary (detailed itinerary will be emailed to each participant before the start of the retreat)

Prior to the retreat: 

  • Participants are strongly encouraged to fly out from the United States on Wednesday to arrive to Oviedo in the morning of Thursday, May 15th 
  • Van pick up will be at the airport around 12pm but exact pick-up time will be dependent on the majority of arriving participants
  • Alternately, participants may arrive a day or two earlier and stay in Oviedo (suggested lodgings will be emailed to registered participants); Van pick-up will be in the city of Oviedo at a central landmark after the airport pick-up.

Day 1 (Thursday)

  • Meet the rest of the group at 12pm in Oviedo (airport or city center)
  • Brief introductions (12pm)
  • Depart to Hotel Fuentes de Lucia at 12:30pm 
  • Arrive, Check in, and Lunch at Fuentes de Lucia
  • Quick Tour of the surrounding areas
  • Free time
  • Yoga class/Meditation at 5:30pm
  • Dinner
  • Group Cultural Briefing, discussion of our Itinerary for the week, running and injury prevention

Days 2 - 3 (Friday - Saturday)

  • 7:30/8am - Morning Run - warm up together, break into 2 groups, Group 1: experienced runners (longer run), Group 2: walkers and hikers (shorter distance)
  • Stretching session
  • 9am - Breakfast
  • 10:30am - Free time or Day trip
  • 11:30am - Yoga Class (when not on Day trip)
  • 1pm - Lunch
  • 2-5pm - Day Trip with free time to explore on your own, or stay at the Retreat 
  • 5:30/6pm - Yoga Class (if back in time from Day trip; Note: there will only be 1 yoga class per day)
  • 7:30pm - Dinner
  • Group discussion/Meditation

Day 4 - Race Day (Sunday)

  • 6:30am - Stretching session/Yoga
  • 7am - Light Breakfast
  • 7:30am - Depart for the Half Marathon (30 minutes away)
  • 9am - Run the Race, or Cheer and Mingle with Local Runners
  • 12pm - Lunch 
  • 2-5pm - back at the Retreat/Free Time
  • 5:30pm - Yoga class
  • 7pm - Dinner 
  • 8pm - Group Gathering 

Day 5 - 7 (Monday - Wednesday)   

  • 7:30/8am - Morning Hike or Run/Stretching session
  • 9am - Breakfast
  • 10:30am - Free time or Day trip
  • 11:30am - Yoga Class (when not on Day trip)
  • 1pm - Lunch
  • 2-5pm - Day Trip with free time to explore on your own, or stay at the Retreat 
  • 5:30/6pm - Yoga Class (if back in time from Day trip; Note: there will only be 1 yoga class per day)
  • 7:30pm - Dinner
  • 8:30 - Group discussion/Meditation
